I finally paid my dues to the culinary gods and started my official pastry classes. The past five days have been full of baking, learning, and butter.
For those of you eagerly awaiting—I hope—Part II of the chewy or crispy chocolate chip cookie battle, it’s coming but not just yet. I planned on making crispy cookies earlier this week. Turns out, the first thing we made in class is chocolate chip cookies. Chef demonstrated his chocolate chips on Tuesday. We then recreated his recipe Wednesday and again yesterday. To sum up, I have two batches of chocolate chip cookies already on my counter. Once they’re gone, and if I haven’t become a chocolate chip cookie myself, Part II will be on its way!
If you haven’t gathered by now, we are learning about cookies in class. In addition to the chocolate chips, we started brownies on Tuesday. Then in a mad baking dash, I made (even more) chocolate chips, chocolate hazelnut biscotti, strassbergers, and finished the brownies with ganache yesterday.
Completing 4 cookies in 3 hours in an unfamiliar kitchen seemed daunting at first. Then, I just pretended I was in a challenge on Top Chef*, put my head down, and got to work. I left class with a sense of pride and a bag stuffed with cookies…and then I went home and fell into a cookie coma.
*Personal Admission #9: I’d like to apologize to my boyfriend and roommate for binge watching Top Chef. I know it isn’t their favorite show. I’m not even sure why I like it so much. It’s not like I can eat the food. And it makes me so hungry. Also, how is Padma so skinny? She eats 20 dishes an episode but is still wafer thin. What is going on there?
